Recall and Livestock Safety
The most important skill for safety and freedom.
When we teach recall, we want you to know what proper safety and control looks like. We want to give you a dog that will come back to you enthusiastically every time you call them. A dog that will stay in sight, instead of disappearing off into the distance. And we want you to trust your dog not to cause harm to other animals when in public. So you can give your dog the off lead freedom they deserve, as a responsible dog owner.
When it comes to recall and keeping your dog safe in the countryside, we know first hand how important it is to have control. As farmers ourselves, we love all our animals - not just our dogs - and we know how devastating it can be when things go wrong.
We start with a strong bond
We want your dog to Love to come back to you, and to do so enthusiastically for whatever you have to offer. We teach our clients how to build drive and motivation, whether your dog is motivated by food, toys, or simply your affection - so that when you call their name or whistle to them, they’ll turn right around without hesitation.
We continue with obedience and Impulse Control
Toys can be a fantastic way to teach your dog healthy limits. One of the essential skills you can teach any dog is not just when to chase something, but when not to. We call this impulse control, which means learning when not to interact with the things that your dog finds most exciting - whether that is a toy, a person, or another dog.
Part of solid obedience training is proofing your dogs skills in lots of different scenarios - so that you know how they will respond when life throws a curveball your way.
We finish with Remote Collar Training for livestock safety.
The scientific reality is that when it comes to deterring your dog from hunting and killing other animals, the only proven system of creating an avoidance is with remote collar training.
We believe that we have an ethical responsibility to teach you and your dog how to have a fantastic experience with remote collar training, by showing you how to condition the collar at a low level with positive reinforcement, and help your dog understand how to succeed.
We want to keep any high level deterrents with an e collar at an absolute minimum - but we also know that a quick startle with an e-collar to save the lives of dogs, sheep, deer, pheasants and other animals is a far better option that having a dog shot or euthanised because of the unfortunate mistakes that so many people make.
-
Many of our clients ask us how to guarantee 100% reliable recall - and our answer is always the same. Have the best relationship with your dog, strong obedience, and learn how to use an e-collar to teach them to avoid prey.
We don’t sell people false promises that they’ll be “sexier than a squirrel” by jumping around and throwing food about, because Its not true, and it sets people up to fail because they can never beat their dogs natural instincts. That’s why we focus on quality training from the ground up, and the very best training systems and tools for success.
-
Modern remote collar training uses either a Vibrate Collar or an Electric Stimulus collar overwhelmingly in a non-aversive capacity. By pairing the sensation of the collar at a low level (a subtle vibration or a gentle tingling sensation) with a familiar reward (food, praise and affection), we can teach dogs to recognise the low level sensation of a remote collar as a form of communication in the same way as a voice command, hand gesture, or a lead - all in a way which is fun, enjoyable and engaging for the dog, and at a level so low that most people cannot feel it.
-
In situations where a predatory dog may attempt to chase or kill other animals such as birds, deer or sheep - a dog which has already been properly introduced to the remote collar can be taught to avoid these animals using the sensation as a limited aversive.
In these instances, the remote collar - specifically the electric stimulus - is by requirement an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience designed to deter the dog from chasing and killing other animals. Under professional guidance and supervision, the goal should always be the lowest and most limited use possible of aversive stimulus to successfully deter a dog from an attack.
In the majority of cases, a single aversive stimulus from a remote collar is enough to deter a dog from prey attacks for a period of up to 3 years.
